This image shows two African American athletes (Tommie Smith, Gold medalist and John Carlos, Bronze medalist) who placed in the 200-meter dash at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico. They took their place on the podium wearing black socks to represent black poverty, standing to empower the African American community, wearing Olympic Project for Human Rights badges and raising both of their fists in the air in the Black Power salute.
This is a wonderful photo! I had the opportunity to meet sit down And get to spend quality time with both of these individuals. I must say that I learned quite a bit about what they went through and what it meant for them to honor their beliefs the way they did... What was most important to me about what they said was that the salute was meant to respresent a cause that was bigger than the two athletes. That's part of the reason john Carlos has the left hand raised and not the right . They wanted their gesture to represent the struggle of all not just te African American people. Thank you tina for this wonderful photo. For me it will forever represent the ability that each one of has to impact the world in ways we may never imagine!!!!!!!!
